Choosing a large bedside cot - click through the next article -

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents sleep close to their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months old, at which point your baby is old enough to be moved to an actual cot.

Mehack is an MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model features an integrated bassinet that can be used throughout the home. It also comes with a manual rocking feature. It was also simple to assemble and came in its own bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while cot beds are generally only used up to three years older. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes to choose from - standard and large - both of which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot beds. Choosing the larger one is a good option when you want your child to sleep in it until the age of +/- three.

And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. Unlike some International or European cot brands The Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed, look for one that can be raised up to a height that is comfortable for you to feed your the baby. It must also be able of being dropped to the ground so that you can pull your baby towards you for feedings at night or soothing. This feature is especially helpful in the event of recovering from an operation such as a C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.

You should also think about how low you would like the base of your crib to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their infants from their standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher level to give them greater stability. One of our mum testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with an easily collapsible side that you can press at the push of the button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head up with no assistance, which is typically at around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. You should also be aware that if your child is old enough to turn an existing bedside or bassinet into a cot, you will have to take the sides off once they are able to do so. This will stop them from climbing out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of cribs for bedside use with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. The most luxurious models could include features such as a built-in nightlight, a soothing centre which plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or even an adjustable base that allows you to get your baby's food in the right place. You can also find models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to move to a bigger bed.

For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and move them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean sections or those who have to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the Best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib and has a machine-washable interior, reflux incline, and a rocking bedside crib feature. It's a bit larger than the other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel cot bedside, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and children. It is very easy to move and extremely sturdy. She also said that the bassinet's swivelling base was fantastic because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from C-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety feature is that it can be easily raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or their diaper. This is why it's perfect for mothers who are still recovering from a C section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side with the press of a button so you can easily lift your baby without needing to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. You should also be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, like pillows and duvets, which could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing components (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are trapped between a bedside travel crib rail and an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that could be converted into different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different option to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses which would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. This attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when voting on the final rule which is expected to come out in November 2021.
